Abstract

1438280 Mowing machines A W KIDD 6 Aug 1973 [4 Aug 1972] 36427/72 Heading A1F A mowing machine comprises a flail-carrying shaft 24, which rotates in the direction indicated of the arrow A, and is mounted beneath a cover comprising two octagonal end plates connected by five rectangular plates 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12. The shaft axis is placed so that its minimum distance from each rectangular plate increases if the plates are taken in the order indicated by the arrow A. Elongate baffles 56 may be mounted on the inner surfaces of plates 8 and 10 to deflect the cut grass into the path of the blades so as to be cut again. The rotor is driven from a tractor power take off shaft through a shaft 28, bevel gearbox 30, a countershaft and three parallel belts 34. The machine, which travels on four skids 38, 40, is connected through brackets 46, 48 to the three point linkage of the tractor. The greater part of the machine's weight is supported by tension springs 50, so that, in use it skims over the surface of the pasture. The speed of the cut grass is reduced by the increasing distance between the blades and successive plates and by collision with the walls of the cover, thus the grass is prevented from being driven too fiercely into the stubble, which would be undesirable for good pasture re-growth.
