Abstract

1437816 Reactivating active carbon KUREHA KAGAKU KOGYO KK 15 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 23167/73 Heading C1A [Also in Division F4] Active carbon granules having a particle size of from 0À1 to 2 mm. are continuously regenerated by treatment with a hot gas, by continuously feeding the granules to be regenerated into the upper chamber of a furnace 1 which comprises two carbon granule treating chambers I and II which are arranged vertically one above the other, and each of which is internally partitioned e.g. by walls 10 and 10<SP>1</SP>, to provide a staggered flow path between its granule inlet and outlet; the carbon granules in the upper chamber being heated to a temperature of from 200‹ to 500‹ C. by means both of a flow of gas rising from the lower chamber via a perforated partition 4 between the chambers, and also by external heating means 5, the flow of gas serving to fluidize the granules in the chamber whereby they are dried and desorbed, the treating gas and any decomposition products being discharged from the upper end of the chamber; the dried and desorbed granules being transferred to the lower chamber via an overflow pipe 3 extending from an upper part of the upper chamber to a lower part of the lower chamber; and in this lower chamber the granules are heated at a temperature of from 500‹ to 1000‹ C. by means both of a hot gas flow fed, e.g. via pipe 6 to the lower end of the lower chamber and also by external heating means 5<SP>1</SP>, the hot gas flow serving to fluidize the particles in the lower chamber and thereby reactivate the carbon granules, which reactivated granules are continuously withdrawn via an overflow pipe 8<SP>1</SP> extending from an upper part of the lower chamber. If desired the furnace may have a third chamber, Fig. 3, not shown, when the upper and middle chamber are used to dry and desorb the granules in the same manner as is employed in chamber I, the granules being transferred between upper and middle chambers by the same type of overflow pipe.
