Abstract

1422412 Purifying water CHIYODA KAKO KENSETSU KK 18 Jan 1973 [24 Jan 1972 (2) 28 June 1972 (2)] 2572/73 Heading -C1C In a water purifying process water from line 1 and activated carbon from ejector 6 are passed countercurrently through column 3 divided by perforated plates into a plurality of fluidized bed zones 23 in which the activated carbon is fluidized by the water, and the spent carbon is discharged from the bottom of column 3, regenerated in device 11 and recycled to the column. The zones 23 are connected by down comers for the flow of activated carbon. It is preferred that (1) each plate has an unperforated portion directly below a downcomer, the portion having a diameter 2-4 times the inside diameter of the downcomer and the distance between the downcomer and plate is ¢-4 times the inside diameter, and/or (2) the lower end of each downcomer is at not more than ¢ the height of the associated bed and the area of the downcomer is not more than 20% of the apertured area of the plate carrying the bed. In a preferred embodiment the spent carbon is regenerated by passing it through a desorbing chamber in which it is fluidized and heated to 100-700‹ C. and then through an activating chamber in which it is fluidized, heated indirectly by combustion gas to 500-1000‹ C. and contacted with steam. The hot gas exhausted from the activating chamber may be used in the desorbing chamber. In the activating chamber the carbon may be heated by indirect or direct electric heating or by high-frequency heating.
