Abstract

1437493 Blood oxygenators RHONEPOULENC SA 11 Sept 1973 [12 Sept 1972] 42732/73 Heading A5R An extracorporeal blood circuit comprises a cannula 3, with a non-occlusive enlargement of radial resilient branches 5 near its end, insertable into a patient's vein and connected by flexible silicone elastomer tubes 7, 11 via peristaltic or tubular membrane and valve pumps 6, 10 and a blood oxygenator 1, with microporous, water-repellent membranes 2, to a flared-out prosthesis 8 stitchable in a slit of a patient's artery 9, the useful internal volume and hence flow rate of each pump varying between minimum and maximum limits proportionally to its inlet blood pressure, the useful volume of pump 6 reaching a maximum within the range of atmospheric pressure 0 to -20 mm of mercury and that of pump 10 reaching a minimum within the range of atmospheric pressure 0 to +20 mm of mercury. Pump 10, with an elliptical cross section at rest, has a higher useful maximum flow rate and a lower useful minimum flow rate than pump 6, the latter pump having a circular cross section at rest of shorter internal perimeter than pump 10, and both pumps having identical rotors mounted on a common shaft driven by an adjustable speed single motor 12. Alternatively each pump may be driven by a separate motor with identical speed/voltage characteristics supplied by a fixed or adjustable common voltage source. If the pumps are of the tubular membrane and valves type each can be driven by a common or separate synchronised pulse generator. Component walls in contact with blood have a smooth organosilicon coating. The blood is reheated by electrical resistance 18 depending on temperatures sensed by probes 19, 20. A bottle 16 introduces blood or medicinal liquid through pump 13 into pump 6. Manometer 17 measures blood pressure across the wall of a flexible tube and manometer 14 measures the pressure in the oxygenator 1. An extra oxygenator and pumps can be connected between taps 22, 23.
