Abstract

1437441 Electrolytic chromate treatment of tin plated steel KAWASAKI STEEL CORP 9 July 1973 32640/73 Heading C7B Tin plated steel is (a) electrolytically chromate treated by contacting it as cathode with a solution containing hexavalent chromium ions and (b) thereafter heated to a temperature which is greater than the melting point of tin (i.e. 232‹C) and not greater than 400 C. Specified conditions are an aqueous solution of Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 at pH 3.0 to 5.0 and at room temperature to 70‹C, a current density of 0.1 to 10A/dm<SP>2</SP> and a treating time of 0.1 to 3 seconds. The heating may be at 280‹C to 350‹C by resistance heating with an electric current being fed through the tin plated steel. The method may include a further step of contacting the treated steel as cathode with a solution containing hexavalent chromium ions.
