Abstract

1436744 Electrolytic treatment of aluminium strip HOECHST AG 8 June 1973 [10 June 1972] 27404/73 Heading C7B Aluminium strip is treated electrolytically by moving the strip past a jet of substantially solidfree and gas-free electrolyte issuing from a nozzle and impinging on the strip over the whole width thereof at a velocity of at least 10m/sec, the electrolyte contacting an electrically conductive portion of the nozzle which is at one potential and the strip being held at a different potential. As shown the strip 10 is passed about drum 1 whilst jets of electrolyte are applied thereto via nozzles 2 and 3, which nozzles are coated with insulation 4, 5 except for conductive bands 12 which contact the electrolyte to supply electric current thereto. The nozzles 2, 3 are connected to opposite poles of an electric current source and hence the strip 10 forms a bi-polar electrode between said nozzles. Air nozzles 14 prevent escape of electrolyte from the container 13. The first nozzle may produce roughening of the strip and the second may produce oxidation; alternatively A.C. current may be used whereby an anodic treatment may be effected by each nozzle.
