1436736 Preventing ribbon winding W REINERS VERWALTUNGS-GmbH 29 Aug 1973 [1 Sept 1972] 40589/73 Heading D1J To prevent ribbon winding the friction contact between a package 1 and a thread guide drum 2 is intermittently varied, there being an additional drum 31 serving to press the package 1 against the thread guide drum 2. The drive to the thread guide drum 2 is also varied. In the drawing a rocker shaft 5 operates linkwork 'to cause a friction pulley 4 to move to and from a setting in which it couples a driving pulley 3 with a drum 2. The rocker shaft 5 also oscillates a rod 14 in a manner causing spring means 18, 19 to bias a pivoted lever anti-clockwise about its pivot 17a. Such displacement of the lever 17 is prevented by an arm 20 thereof engaging a pawl 21. As the package 1 increases in diameter it rocks its supporting frame 22, and a toothed segment 23 that is rigid with the frame 22, anti-clockwise in a manner causing a tooth on the segment 23 to rock the pawl 21 out of engagement with the arm 20. The oscillation of the rod 14 by the rocker shaft 5 is now free to cause the lever 17 to repeatedly cause a detent 25 on the lever 17 to press against a toothed segment 26 that is rigid with the frame 22. Each thrust of the detent 25 against the toothed segment 26 serves to temporarily reduce the pressure of the package 1 against the thread guide drum 2. The drum 31 ensures that the contact pressure between the package 1 and the thread guide drum 2 does not fall below a predetermined minimum value. As the package 1 increases in diameter the spring 32 is elongated to increase the thrust of the drum 31 on the package 1. Alternatively the spring 32 may be absent so that the drum 31 exerts a constant thrust on the package.
