Abstract

1436724 Propellers BOLT BERANEK & NEWMAN Inc 7 June 1973 27242/73 Heading B7V [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] In a foil for use in a fluid flow system such as a marine propeller blade or an airscrew blade in which fluid flows about the surface of the foil, the whole or portions of the surface of the foil are permeable to the fluid, the permeability being so selected with regard to the soundproducing fluid-flow forces generated by the interaction of the fluid-flow with the foil that such forces are substantially less than those which would be generated by the interaction of the same fluid flow with a foil of dimensionally identical section the entire surface of which is substantially impermeable to the fluid. In another aspect the foil is formed with a series of notches extending inwardly from the trailing edge of the foil the effect of the notches being such that sound-producing fluid-flow forces are substantially less than would be the case if the blade were un-notched.
