Abstract

1436462 Water jet propulsion; steering nozzles WESTDEUTSCHE WERKZEUGMASCHINEN GmbH 11 July 1973 [11 July 1972] 33102/73 Heading B7V A steering nozzle 8 fits over the outlet port 5 of a water jet propulsion unit, is pivotable about a vertical axis 7 so that its side walls 15 laterally deflect the water jet and has a reversing flap 14 which pivots downwards on arms 23 about a horizontal axis for reversing the jet. Sealing ribs 22 are provided on the walls of the outlet port 5 and further ribs (not shown) are provided between the top wall of the port 5 and the underside of the upper part of the nozzle 8, and on the upper rear edge of the nozzle 8 and the upper edge of the flap 14. The nozzle 8 is open at the bottom apart from a curved baffle extending between the side walls 15. In one embodiment (Fig. 4) the flap has the two lateral surfaces 25a, 25b and the two lateral surfaces 25b deflect the water into respective channels 27 which have outlets 28 formed in pivot arms 23 of the flap 14. Vanes 26 (Fig. 3, not shown) are provided on the flap 14 to improve water flow on to the middle surface 25a.
