Abstract
1379942 Nozzles HYDRONAUTICS Inc 23 Aug 1972 [26 Aug 1971] 39216/72 Heading B2F [Also in Division El] A jetting apparatus in which a liquid jet 24 is forced from a restricted orifice 18 at a pressure at which vapour cavities form in the jet is operated under conditions whereby the jet is surrounded by a liquid medium to avoid the reduction and/or collapse of the cavities. Jetting liquid, preferably water, is supplied at 14 and its velocity is increased by both a contracting interior surface 16 and an adjustable rod 20, until its pressure is below the vapour pressure of the water and cavities form. In the embodiment shown the cavitating jet is surrounded by liquid 46 ejected from an annular orifice 40 at a much lower rate than the jet, to prevent the admission of air to the jet. In other embodiments: a flexible skirt is arranged around the orifice to contain a body of liquid (Fig. 3, not shown); or the whole apparatus is submerged for use (Fig. I, not shown).
