930,567. Jet propulsion stream control. BERKELEY PUMP CO. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 10, 1960], No. 35397/61. Class 114. A hydro-jet control device on a watercraft propelled by a jet stream ejected rearwardly through a discharge nozzle 17 comprises a manifold 18 having horizontally spaced passageways 18a, 18 extending from a central, upper divided opening 23 and terminating at lower jet discharge openings 24, 25 having guide vanes 26 therein and divergently directed at equal angles from a forward direction with respect to the craft, said manifold openings being directed generally forward with respect to the craft when mounted on the stem 14 thereof via a mounting plate 19 having a discharge opening 21 in line with the discharge nozzle 17, and means for providing selective horizontal and vertical positioning the manifold relative to the water craft discharge opening whereby said divided opening may be positioned to direct all, none, or a portion of the jet stream into any of said passageways, thereby controlling the directional movement of the water craft. The manifold also defines a laterally convergent nozzle 27 subjacent the divided opening 23 for directing the jet stream generally rearward when the opening 23 is positioned above the water craft discharge opening whereby horizontal movements of the manifold will laterally redirect the jet stream. Thus when the manifold 18 is in its full raised position with the nozzle 27 directly opposite the opening 21, the jet stream will be directed rearwardly, propelling the craft forwardly. When the manifold is moved horizontally to a position such as in Fig. 5, the convergent sides of the nozzle 27 direct the jet stream to one side, causing the craft to be turned. By moving manifold 18 to its lowermost position, Fig. 8, with opening 23 in alignment with opening 21, the jet stream will be directed through passageways 18a, 18b, thereby being directed forwardly to cause the craft to move rearwardly. If the manifold is then moved horizontally, e.g. as in Fig. 6, the jet streams emitted from openings 24 and 25 will be unequal and the craft therefore be turned as it is moved backward. It is possible to move the manifold to a neutral position, Fig. 7, wherein the jet stream is directed to nozzle 27 and via opening 23 to openings 24, 25 in such a manner that the forwardly directed forces are balanced by the rearwardly directed jet streams, it then being possible to move the manifold horizontally to produce a couple causing the craft to rotate in a relatively stationary position.
