Abstract

1436451 Displays OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 6 June 1973 [7 June 1972] 26967/73 Heading G4H A system for supplying electrical operating voltage to conductor arrays (e.g. row and column) of a gas discharge display panel, comprises resistor-diode addressing matrix means for addressing selected ones of the conductors in at least one of the conductor arrays, said matrix means including a plurality of resistor-diode gate elements 24, 25 with a resistor-diode junction 23 in each connected to a respective one of the conductors, a plurality of addressable resistor drivers 31 for pulsing a selected group of N of the resistors, a plurality of addressable sink circuits 40 each connected to sink current from any of a respective group of M (non-adjacent) ones -of the diodes, there being M Î N conductors in the array, an upsustain transistor switch Q1 connected 22 between one terminal of a periodic-sustainvoltage source and all the resistor-diode junctions 23, and a down-sustain transistor switch Q2 connected 50 to the side of each diode 25 not connected to the junction 23. Q1 is used to charge the panel capacitance for sustain operation and Q2 is used to discharge it again. A transistor switch Q4 is used instead of Q2 when erasure is required. The write and erase potentials are supplied from 30 (top). Diode 60 shown connects Q2 (normally off during addressing operations) to the write or erase level, avoiding charging of the collector capacitance of Q2 through resistors 24. Diode 41, shown across Q3, reduces currents through diodes 22, 25 if both Q1 and Q2 are on. The discharge and charge currents do not pass through the addressable sink circuits 40. Circuitry as above can be provided for both row and column conductors, the sustain waveforms in the two cases being 180 degrees out of phase.
