Abstract

1436150 Electrolytically hardening a film formed on a chromium containing iron alloy INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 9 Oct 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 59110/73 Divided out of 1435518 Addition to 1305636 Headings C7B and C7U The hardness of a porous film, formed on the surface of a Cr-Fe alloy by treatment in aqueous chromic and sulphuric acids, is increased by cathodic treatment in a bath containing aqueous chromic acid and HF at a c.d. # 1A/dm<SP>2</SP> for a time sufficient to harden the film but not so long that any Cr becomes visible as a white deposit. The molar ratio of chromic acid: F may be 20-50:1 with a maximum current amount of 3A-min/dm<SP>2</SP> at 20‹C. The alloy treated may contain 18-20% Cr and 8-12% Ni.
