Abstract

1436112 Road traffic signals on vehicles CAV Ltd 10 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18493/72 Heading G4Q A direction-indicator system on a road vehicle comprises a single integrated circuit 12 and circuitry externally connectable thereto in at least two alternative ways to enable the system to operate in any one of at least two different modes. In the embodiment three modes of operation are explored: (a) "European" system.- Pilot lamps L1, L2 flash in phase with main indicator lamps 16, 17 under normal conditions with vehicle trailer attached. If one indicator lamp fails or the trailer be disconnected one of the pilot lamps ceases to operate and if two indicator lamps fail or with the trailer disconnected one indicator lamp fails, both pilot lamps cease to operate. To effect this mode terminals G and H are respectively connected to transistors ET3, ET2. (b) "British" system.- A single pilot lamp L1 normally flashes in phase with lamps 16, 17 and is extinguished when one or more lamps 16, 17 fail; with trailer connected the sensing level at which lamp failure is detected is modified to allow for the extra lamps on the trailer. Terminals G, H are connected together, as are terminals F, M; transistor ET2, diode ED2, resistor R5 and lamp L2 are not required, and terminal I is connected via resistor ER4 to closed trailer plug contact 18. (c) "British economy" system.-A single pilot lamp (not shown) is connected across relay contacts 14 to flash in anti-phase with the main indicator lamps under normal conditions. If one or more indicator lamps fail the flasher circuit in the integrated circuit is stopped, the remaining indicator lamps remain lit and the pilot lamp is off; the level at which lamp failure is detected is modified when a trailer is connected.
