Abstract

1435761 Electrographic development apparatus XEROX CORP 22 May 1973 [22 May 1972] 24342/73 Heading G2H The apparatus comprises a magnetic developer applicator roll 48 which is moveable from an inoperative position to its operative position shown where it deposits toner particles on a latent image on a photo-conductive surface 12 of a drum 10. The developer 50, comprising toner mixed with a magnetically attractable carrier powder, is fed from buckets of a rotating paddle wheel 44 to a magnetic transport roll 46 and thence to the developer roll 48. The whole development unit 28 is contained within a housing 42 mounted on rollers 88, 90 to pivot into the operative position, against a spring 68, by an amount determined by a stop comprising a wheel 71 contacting the drum 10, the pivoting force being provided by the reaction torque produced when the wheel 44 and rolls 46, 48 are driven. When the drive is stopped, the spring 68 returns the development unit 28 to its inoperative position against a stop 66. The apparatus is particularly suitable for use with multicolour development systems using, for example, three development units 28, (30, 32) containing different colour toners mounted in succession around the drum 10. A toner dispenser 64 serves to maintain the concentration of toner 51 in the mixed developer 50.
