Abstract
1435529 Refrigerating BORG-WARNER CORP 25 July 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 35481/73 Heading F4H In a continuous cycle absorption refrigeration system, using, e.g. lithium bromide solution as absorbent and water as refrigerant, if the volume of liquid in the refrigerant circuit is reduced to a predetermined minimum as a result of low cooling-water temperatures or reduced refrigeration loads, absorbent solution is introduced into the refrigerant circuit. The system comprises a condenser 18 and generator 24 in an upper shell 10 and an evaporator 34 and absorber 40 in a lower shell 26. The absorber heating coil 20 is supplied with steam through a valve 22 in accordance with the temperatures of the chilled fluid passing to the load and of the cooling water passing into the absorber cooling coil 36. A circuit 14 for cooling water comprises the cooling coil 36 in the absorber, a condenser coil 12 and a cooling tower 108. When the ambient temperature and/or the refrigeration load decreases, reduced activity in the generator 24 causes increased dilution and the level of liquid refrigerant in a receiver 90 associated with an evaporator pan 32 falls, thereby actuating a switch 203a to open a valve 203 to divert a portion of the flow of absorbent from the outlet of a pump 72 to the inlet of refrigerant pump 92. The diverted absorbent mixes with the refrigerant and is passed by the pump 92 to the evaporator spray header 30. Omission of a cooling tower by-pass renders the system sensitive to load changes and to prevent the temperature of the refrigerant in the evaporator from approaching freezing whilst permitting continuous operation of the system, a refrigerant transfer line 205 and control valve 207 are provided. At a predetermined low temperature detected by a thermostat 207a, the valve 207 is opened causing a portion of liquid in the refrigerant circuit to be diverted from the outlet of refrigerant pump 92 directly to the absorber spray header 38, thereby diluting the absorbent delivered to the absorber sprays and reducing activity in the absorber.
