Abstract
1435300 Automatic control of speed WEIR PUMPS Ltd 8 June 1973 [8 June 1972] 26724/72 Heading G3R The speed of a steam turbine 1 is automatically held at a required level by controlling the actuator of a combined stop and throttle valve in accordance with the difference between the actual speed of the turbine and the required speed. Additionally means are provided to close the valve when abnormal conditions are sensed by switching off the electrical supply to the actuator. The speed is measured by an A.C. tachometer 10, 11 and the pulses produced are amplified at 13 and supplied to converter 14. The D.C. output voltage Vs from counter 14 is displayed at 15 and passed to comparator 16 for comparison with reference voltage Vd. The error signal Ve formed is passed through voltage to current converter 18 and supplied to the valve control device 9. The valve controller has a power supply connected at 7 which passes through switch 25. Under overspeed or other abnormal conditions switch 25 is opened which allows the valve to close under spring action to stop turbine 1. The speed signal from 10 is taken additionally to amplifier 21 and to a trigger arrangement comprising filter 22 and relay 23 which when an overspeed occurs causes switch 25 to open. The speed measuring arrangement is connected with relay 23 via line 27 so that failure of 13 or 14 causes switch 25 to open. Other operating parameters, e.g. bearing oil pressure or temperature, could be monitored at 30 or 31 and used to control switch 25. The overspeed arrangement 20 is made inoperative during starting and a speed limit circuit 34 is used instead. A mechanically actuated overspeed control 32 is provided for use during starting the turbine when the electrical control is inoperative.
