Abstract

1429304 Automatic control of speed CAV Ltd 21 March 1973 [4 April 1972] 15350/72 and 15352/72 Heading G3R In a system for controlling the supply of fuel to an I.C. engine a safety circuit is provided to shut-down the supply of fuel if a speed measuring transducer produces no output or if the engine overspeeds. The fuel pump 11 of engine 12 is controlled by rod 19 operated by actuator 18 supplied from power amplifier 17 controlled by control circuit 15 in response to speed, pump output and demand signal inputs. The control system described is similar to those described in Specifications 1416861 and 1416862. A transistor 31 is normally held non-conducting by the voltage across capacitor 28 which is derived from the A.C. tachometer 13. When transistor 31 conducts under fault conditions it operates control 38 to cause control circuit 15 to reduce the fuel supply. In a modification transistor 31 may inhibit amplifier 17 directly or through safety network 45. Transistor 31 is switched off during starting. When engine 12 overspeeds the voltage produced at the output of diode pump circuit 14 causes transistor 44 to conduct and operate safety network 45 to inhibit amplifier 17. A duplicate control using transistor 86 is provided for maximum safety. The circuit shown may be modified to respond to failures in the diode pump circuit 14 by providing a long-tailed-pair arrangement to control the conduction of a further transistor, Fig. 7 (not shown).
