Abstract

1435283 Offshore platforms EXXON PRODUCTION RESEARCH CO 23 Sept 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 41260/74 Heading E1H An offshore platform has a jacket made in upper and lower sections 11, 14 which are connected together on site and then sunk to the seabed. Each section is transported to the site, for example by barge and launched, it being arranged to float with some of the legs breaking the surface only. The corresponding legs, e.g. 20A, of the two sections are brought together, for example by winch and flanged joints 22 are bolted together. The sections are aligned with the aid of conical latched guides 74, 74', preferably arranged so that the underwater guide or guides engage before the guides on the surface. Having been assembled, the joints 22 are welded by welders who enter the jackets through access tubes 70' 72'. The legs have diaphragms 40, 41 which prevent water entering; these diaphragms are ruptured later by piles driven along the legs in pile guides 50. The jacket is finally ballasted by opening seacocks 43, so that it settles on the sea bed.
