Abstract

1434848 Extruding ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB 13 Sept 1973 [14 Sept 1972] 43071/73 Heading B3P In a method of hydrostatic extrusion a billet 8 is used which has a cavity 11 at its rear end, the cavity being filled with hydrostatic extrusion fluid or other material and near the end of the extrusion process being isolated from the extrusion chamber. The isolation of the cavity as the billet rear part enters the die 3 causes a pressure build up in the cavity which expands axially of the billet, Fig. 8. In the die orifice the pressure may sever the billet from its rear part, Fig. 10. The cavity may be defined by a radial hole 11 or the billet may have several cavities each defined by a radial hole which may meet each other, Fig. 3 (not shown). Alternatively the cavity may be defined by an annular groove (21), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). The pressure of the hydrostatic fluid drops when the cavity reaches the die and this drop may be detected and used to control the extrusion process. When the cavity is exposed downstream of the die a bang is produced which may also be used for control. The cavity may be filled with material which has a smaller deformation resistance than the billet. Plugs of plastics or metal may be used for the holes 11. The process can be used for tubular billets, Figs. 12-15 (not shown).
