Abstract
1434829 Valves GENERAL MOTORS CORP 13 Dec 1973 [13 Dec 1972] 57736/73 Heading F2U [Also in Division F1] A valve assembly 56 for controlling recirculation of I.C. engine exhaust gas comprises a closure member 90 disposed between exhaust gas inlet and outlet passages 54, 58 respectively and carried by a stem 92 supported by a diaphragm 108 defining a closed chamber 110 with top cover 104. Chamber 110 is subject via a passage 122 in stem 92 and a restricted orifice 124 to the pressure in a region 82 immediately upstream of closure 90. The latter is positioned by diaphragm 108 so as to maintain that pressure substantially constant. Diaphragm 108 is biased to the valve closed position by a weak spring 112 assisted by a second spring 128 which comes into operation when closure 90 has reached the fully open position, thus reducing the response of diaphragm 108 to further increases in exhaust back pressure and ensuring that closure 90 does not prematurely engage orifice member 84 to shut-off recirculation. Heat conduction to diaphragm 108 is reduced by an asbestos disc 114 disposed between lower and upper housing members 72, 96 respectively and retained by intermediate member 116. The latter also houses graphited asbestos stem sealing discs 118 stacked above a steel washer 120. Top cover 104 carries a perforated baffle 138 to prevent any ice that might form on the underside of the cover from dropping on to diaphragm 108 and interfering with valve operation.
