Abstract

1434806 Fluid springs J F VAUGHEN 1 Nov 1973 50756/73 Heading F2S [Also in Division F1] An inflatable lifting device, Fig. 1, comprises a diaphragm 8 attached to a base 11 at 9 and to a rigid lifting platform 12 at 10. The diaphragm is of frusto-conical shape so that it offers more resistance to horizontal movement and tilting of the load. Air, steam, gas, water or oil is admitted through a pressure regulating valve 15. A thickened portion 13 supports the platform 12 above the folded diaphragm in the deflated condition. Fig. 2 shows an embodiment with a semi-torroidal diaphragm 18 which is attached to an upper platform 17 by a ring 19. Chambers 22, 23 are inflated through a valve 21 and orifices 24. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 chambers 30, 33 are inflated separately through valves 32, 35. In Fig. 4 the chamber 38 is directly inflated through a valve 40 whilst chamber 43 is inflated through a duct with a valve 42 and has bleed holes 45 or 47. As shown in Fig. 5 the upper lifting platform may be omitted if the load has a non-planar base. Figs. 6-9 (not shown), illustrate the use of the embodiments of Figs. 1-4 in the upside-down position. Fig. 11 shows an embodiment with a flexible lifting platform 62 and bleed holes 45, 47, in chamber 43. In Fig. 12 the arrangement is similar to Fig. 11 except that the outer chamber is pressurized and the inner chamber 72 is vented at 74 to atmosphere.
