A load balancing device 23 facilitating manual final positioning of a load, comprises a housing 21, 22 to which the load is attached at 24 and a piston 27 movable within the housing and having a piston-rod 30 extending from the housing to support the device 23 at 36, a chamber 33 formed between the piston and the top of the housing being supplied with pressurized air sufficient to support the loaded housing. The piston 27 is attached to a flexible diaphragm 26 secured at its perimeter to the housing. The chamber 33 and a chamber 34 on the other side of the piston, are vented to atmosphere through passages 31, 35, the vent 31 in the chamber 33 acting as a bleed for the pressurized air which is controlled by a valve 41 and gauge 42. In a modification, the system shown in Fig. 2 is inverted, the device being supported at 24 and the load being attached to the piston-rod at 36.
