1434215 Making sections; rolling; forging; continuous casting; stretching A ORICHEL 13 April 1973 [15 April 1972] 17946/73 Headings B3A B3M B3E B3F and B3H A method of making beams such as widefianged or H-beams, channel sections or sheet piling, involves initially producing intermediate sections by rough forming an ingot, by continuous casting, or by extrusion; upsetting or stretching the intermediate sections in such a manner that each section, when rolled to its finished size, may produce more than two different final sizes, and passing the sections through rolling stands to produce beams of the required final size. In an example, Fig. 4, an initial ingot 1 is rough rolled at 16 to produce any of the intermediate sections a to f. These sections are then worked by an upsetting and stretching machine 21 is such a way that, after rolling the appropriate workpiece in stands 17 to 19, any of the final sections 1000 to 300 may be produced. The upsetting and stretching machine, Fig. 6, includes upper and lower beams 22, 22a which embrace an intermediate section 38 and are movable towards or away from each other by double-acting rams 23, Fig. 7. The section is held by laterally adjustable clamping jaws and can either be stretched, by urging the beams apart, or upset by moving them together. In the latter case, rams 30 are used to prevent buckling of the web of the section. When the intermediate sections are formed by continuous casting, a mould having the partial section shown in Fig. 10a may be used. The mould has side walls 39b and an adjustable end wall 39c which is movable to vary the size of the corresponding flange of the section. The end wall is coupled to a non-rotatable screw 42a which is axially adjustable by a worm wheel 44.
