Abstract
1434204 Wet composting; composting sludge and refuse H GUJER 24 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 40195/73 Headings C1B and C1C [Also in Division B1] Aqueous organic sludge is composted by treatment with a gas containing oxygen in a closed vessel which is provided with means of cooling the contents of the vessel to a temperature not below the pasteurization temperature. The vessel may operate at a pressure of up to 6 atm. Oxygen-enriched air or pure oxygen may be employed. Apparatus suitable for the process is also described, wherein a number of concentric rotating drums are provided with scoops and means for conveying the sludge and gas from the inner drums to the outer drums. Fig. 1 shows a closed drum 1 rotatable about a horizontal axis. A second drum 4 is mounted within drum 1. Scoops 3 are fixed to the inside surface of drum 1, as shown in Fig. 4, which is a crosssection taken along line IV-IV of Fig. 1. Scoops 3 are also mounted on the sides of separating walls 3b which are attached to the drum shell and at right angles to drum 1. Sludge flow between chambers occurs through openings 3d. Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) illustrate a rotatable wet composting container and a stationary wet composting container.
