In warmen Ländern z.
Process and apparatus for fermenting organic waste products When processing organic waste products, such as. B. Waste from households, hotels and hospitals, from garbage disposal, from nurseries, gardens, agricultural and various industrial establishments, z. B. slaughterhouses, but also from Abwasserschlarnrrr such as rotted and not rotted sludge, such as active sludge and latrine products, it has been proposed to ferment the products for the purpose of breaking down the waste products into compost.
It is known to serve the purpose of subjecting the pro ducts to an aerobic, thermophilic fermentation in which a vigorous heat build-up is greht before seeing.
To carry out the fermentation process, chambers were used that were filled with the waste products. Inside the chambers are air ducts for the purpose of supplying the air required for the aerobic fermentation process, while the gases that are evolved during the fermentation process can leave the chambers through a suitable outlet.
In such chambers, the waste products are subjected to a thermophilic fermentation in the state in which they arise. It is well known that waste products of the specified type are of a dissimilar and changing composition, so that there is often a lack of one or more of those nutrients that are necessary for the vital activity of thermophilic microorganisms, as well as those for there is insufficient moisture in the correct local distribution. Such conditions mean that in some places there is no thermophilic fermentation.
Other conditions can also result in the fact that the thermophilic fermentation does not take place. B. the air required for fermentation. Not. penetrates the whole filled mass, but rather. is looking for the easiest way to the exit, e.g. 13). along the air ducts.
The waste products therefore usually do not ferment evenly, and the degradation of the products takes a long time to address and is. not completely.
It has therefore been proposed to keep the waste products in motion during their fermentation in that they are interrupted or with. Temporary spaces rotating containers attached to who. The waste products are intimately mixed in such a container and have practically a uniform degree of humidity. At the same time, one of the prerequisites for air is created. the entire mass can penetrate in order to achieve uniform fermentation.
In known rotating fermentation tanks, the air is supplied through mouthpieces on or in the immediate vicinity of one end of the tank, while the gases that are formed during the fermentation process are led away from the other end of the tank. The air flows through the rotating container in its longitudinal direction.
With this air flow in the axial direction, however, there is a risk that the mass is not evenly penetrated by the air. This is due to the fact that the mass, even if the container is 100% full, collapses a little while rotating, so that the air along the walls of the container as well as through the upper part of the container next to the mass v can flow.
This has the disadvantage that the fermentation process, viewed as a whole, proceeds slowly and unevenly, and that the degradation of the waste products, if this is to be complete, takes a relatively long time.
These disadvantages can hardly be remedied by increasing the pressure under which the air is supplied. First of all, this creates the risk that the air outlet opening in the outlet end of the container will be clogged by loose waste products. Insufficient air discharge, however, causes an accumulation of GO2, which was developed during the fermentation process, so that the fermentation process can come to a standstill or become anaerobic, which is highly undesirable.
On the other hand, the fermentation will also come to a standstill at the points where too much air is supplied due to the uneven distribution of the air, since in this case a dried out layer forms around the parts of the waste products, which prevents the fermentation from proceeding .
On the other hand, it is essential for the practical implementation of the fermentation process that the air is introduced into the container under pressure, so that the air is evenly distributed in the filled mass in order to achieve the complete breakdown of the waste products.
Theoretically, such a distribution could also be achieved by sucking the air into the container. With such a suction, however, it can hardly be avoided that the suction mouth pieces or openings are clogged by loose waste products, which is why such a method of operation must be regarded as inexpedient.
It can be seen from this that only a correct interplay between and even distribution of moisture, heat and air in the waste products will result in complete degradation of the same within a very short time, so that the carbohydrates, proteins, and cellulose contained in the products and lignin are transformed into humus by the thermophilic, aerobic bacteria.
These disadvantages can now be remedied by the method according to the invention.
The inventive method for fermenting organic waste products by aerobic, thermophilic fermentation in a rotating container with ventilation is characterized in that the air is introduced into the container in a radial direction, the air supply being distributed to several over at least part of the container length Posts.
Compared with the known air supply in the axial direction, better distribution of the air in the longitudinal direction of the container is achieved because the air can penetrate the filled mass over a larger area than is the case with the known method .
During the rotation of the container, the air can uniformly penetrate the oil, so that it can come into intimate contact with the individual parts of the mass, as a result of which fermentation takes place throughout the whole of the mass can be done quickly.
It is advisable to draw off the exhaust gases in the axial direction through several openings distributed over at least part of the length of the container.
As a result of the more even distribution of the air through the entire mass due to the radial supply, the fermentation process can be accelerated to such an extent that it is possible to carry out fermentation continuously. Expediently, the conditions (length of the container, passage speed, etc.) are chosen so that a heating, fermentation and drying zone is formed and the waste products are largely formed during the passage of the Hasse through the container in the axial direction and continuously are fermented when they leave the container.
This continuous processing of the products makes the new process superior to the previously known methods, since the products have previously been processed in individual portions by emptying the containers each time the mass was fermented and then refilling them.
The air requirement in the individual zones of the container is usually different: the invention offers the possibility of varying the air supply over the length of the container accordingly.
The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out the method with a horizontal, rotatable container which is provided with organs for ventilation. This apparatus is characterized in that the supply openings for the air are distributed over at least part of the length of the container and are connected to a source for air under excess pressure.
The supply openings for the air can nen z. B. be attached in the container jacket. Another possibility for the air supply is that a tube is provided which extends into the interior of the container in the direction of the container axis and which is provided with openings over part of its surface. The first-mentioned construction, however, has the advantage over the last-mentioned construction that the possibility of cleaning the supply openings or mouthpieces is better and that the air is better distributed in a radial direction over the mass filled into the container.
The openings for the removal of the exhaust gases can also be made in the jacket of the container. It is understandable that such openings are easy to clean.
If the outlet openings are mainly located near the point where the mass is poured into the container, the air heated in the fermentation zone will hit the newly filled mass in countercurrent so that it is heated, which accelerates the start of the fermentation process.
Some embodiments of the apparatus according to the invention are shown in the drawing.

FIG. 10 schematically shows a further exemplary embodiment for the container and FIG. 11 shows a cross section through a container with several fermentation chambers. The apparatus according to FIGS. 1 and 2 has an elongated, cylindrical drum 10 with a feed unit attached to a bottom 12 in the form of a feed screw 14 for the waste products and an emptying unit attached to the other container bottom 16, e.g. B. in the form of an emptying screw 18, for the compost.
The shell of the container drum ent long openings 20 are attached through which compressed air can be blown into the container interior, the compressed air to the openings 20 Publ is fed through channels 22. As can be seen from Fig. 4, these channels can be attached to the outside of the container jacket so that the interior of the container presents a smooth, unbroken surface.
If desired, however, the openings can also be formed as through-bores 20a in channels 22a with a triangular cross-section attached to the inner wall of the container (see FIG. 5).
It may be useful to use a combination of the channels shown in Fig. 4 and 5, channels of the type shown in Fig. 5 GE at the ends of the container (within the heating zone or drying zone described below or attached to the parts) are, while channels, as shown in Fig. 4, in the following in the fermentation zone described, are provided.
In particular in the middle section of the container, further openings 24 are provided, through which water can be distributed in the interior of the container, which water is supplied to the openings through a line 26.
The channels 22 or 22a and the line 26 are ge leads to the left end of the container, where they ge in Fig. 2 and 3 shown manifold with sources not shown for the supply of air under pressure or of water through lines 28 or 30 are connected. These lines are lbzw by a in Fig. 3 shown schematically GE shown distributor member with columns 34 and 36 for the passage of compressed air. Water in connection with the channels 22 or 22a and the line 26, in such a way that only Dracekluft is supplied to those channels or openings that come to lie at the bottom during the rotation of the container, while water is only supplied to those lines and openings that on top while rotating the container.
Ventilation openings 38 are also formed in the jacket of the drum (see FIGS. 6 and 7), which are distributed over the jacket surface.
It is preferable, but not required, with consideration of certain operating conditions, which are to be described in more detail below, to attach the largest number of such vent holes in the part of the container jacket that is near the 14 to drive.
Waste products that are fed to the container drum by means of the feed screw 14 migrate through the drum from left to right as it rotates (FIG. 1). In order to promote this movement, it can be useful to put the drum at a slight angle so that the products filled in gradually move in the direction of the emptying screw 18 as a result of gravity.
The drum shown in FIG. 1 can be operated in such a way that three zones can be differentiated, namely a heating zone I, a fermentation zone II and a drying zone III.
The heating zone I is used to preheat the drum 10 filled into the container at the left end. Products, there. It is a matter of getting fermentation going as quickly as possible and bringing the products to an optimal temperature of 35-50 C; This is because it has shown that the highest rate of decay is achieved at this temperature. In general, especially when it is z.
If, for example, it is a question of products for daily waste collection, the waste products themselves will retain sufficient moisture to ensure that the mass filled in is sufficiently saturated. If necessary, however, individual irrigation openings 24 can be made in this part of the drum, which should preferably be set up in such a way that they can be connected to the water pipe 26 as required, so that the water supply can be regulated as required. Likewise, any preheated air can be used to preheat the imported products.
In the course of their movement through the drum, fermentation is started and runs for a certain period of time at a practically constant temperature. The products pass through fermentation zone II of the container drum. In practice it has been shown that it is most useful to keep the fermentation zone at the specified temperature between 35 and 50 C over a substantial part of this zone by means of migrating products.
Once fermentation has started, this temperature range is reached quickly, and the fermentation can also become so vigorous that the specified temperature range is exceeded. It may therefore be necessary to cool the fermenting mass. This is expediently achieved by increasing the air supply to the pale. Increased air supply will mean that the fermenting mass will dry out, which is why it may be necessary to add water to the mass so that it is assured of a suitable moisture content.
In warm countries e.g. B. it may further be necessary to cool the container walls, unm also thereby ensuring the maintenance device of a suitable fermentation temperature in the container.
In certain cases it may be desirable, by restricting the cooling, to allow the temperature of the mass to rise to about 60 to 70 ° C. so that the mass undergoes pasteurization. Tile heating can be allowed to occur in any part of the fermentation zone, but it will be most convenient to move it to the rear of the zone, in the direction of the mass migration through the container. If the pasteurization z. B. would be carried out at the beginning of the fermentation zone, it would be necessary after pasteurization to cool the mass like that and in connection with it to increase the moisture content of the mass. If, on the other hand, the pasteurization takes place at the end of the zone, the mass passes directly into the drying zone after pasteurization, so that drying is promoted.
The air required for fermentation is fed into the interior of the container drum through the openings 20 which lie at the bottom of the container drum while it is rotating. As can be seen from the drawing, such openings are provided over part of the length of the container.
Since the openings 20 are mounted in the jacket of the loading container, the mass itself acts as a valve for the air outlet. In the course of the passage of the mass through the drum, the mass comes into contact with the compressed air on all sides, so that the: air necessary for sufficient fermentation. effectively supplied to the mass and evenly distributed in this, both in the axial and in the radial direction with respect to the container drum, whereby the fermentation is accelerated. becomes.
If the radial air supply under pressure, as shown, leads through from the outside to the inside, then one achieves at the same time an improved possibility of cleaning the air supply openings, since these will be self-cleaning.
-When the mass is largely fully fermented, it comes into the drying zone III. In this zone, a larger amount of air is supplied through openings 20 than the fermentation can need in its SehlussstaAium, which is why the drum contents are gradually subjected to drying and cooling.
The fully fermented product, the compost, is then removed by the drainage tendon 18.
When feeding sheep lamb, the moisture content of the container contents can be so great that it may be desirable to dry the contents somewhat in the heating zone so that its moisture content is reduced. The radial supply of air enables the amount of air supplied to the individual zones of the container drum to be appropriately distributed. This can e.g. B. achieved by the fact that the openings are distributed long ent long with irregular mutual spacing of the container length. It can also be advantageous to build a valve mechanism into the system, with the help of which certain larger or smaller parts of the openings or opening areas can be closed and opened as required.
During fermentation, carbonic acid is developed, which leaves the container drum through the ventilation openings 38. The carbon dioxide production depends on the amount of air supplied and can be used as a measure of the fermentation process.
The carbonic acid produced or the carbonic acid content of the outgoing air can thus be used as a measure of the amount of air that must be supplied to the fermentation zone, and since this air is quickly and evenly distributed in the fermenting mass, so that it is practically uniform Has fermentation character, such a controlled air supply enables the maintenance of optimal fermentation conditions, so that the fermentation time can be greatly reduced.
In the embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention shown in FIG. 8, the air is supplied instead of through openings in the container jacket by means of a tube 40 which extends axially through the center of the drum. The cavity of the tube is connected to the interior of the drum through openings 42 and is connected to a not shown in detail. FIG. 9 shows a combination of the exemplary embodiments shown in FIGS. 1 and 8. The air supply through the openings 20 and 42 can take place uniformly or differently.
Likewise, the distribution of the openings 20 and 42 can be different in the longitudinal direction of the container. In the pipe 40 openings 42 can also be applied only in the area of the fermentation zone.
During the passage through the container drum, the volume of the mass gradually decreases. It has been shown that good fermentation results can be achieved if the container is kept well filled, at least in the fermentation zone, so that the products are relatively calmly opposite the container while the drum is rotating. Too little filling in this container section can have the consequence that the contents are granulated by its relative movement in relation to the container, so that anaerobic fermentation can take place in the sintered parts.
It can therefore be useful to overfieksiehigen these conditions in the formation of the container drum and to form the heating zone of the container with a slightly larger diameter than the rest of the drum, so that there is enough space in the heating zone for the products to be effective mixing and partial grinding (self-grinding with simultaneous preheating, after which the pretreated products are fed into the fermentation zone of the drum, which has a smaller diameter.
An embodiment of such a drum container is shown schematically in FIG.
The Ausführungsbei game of the drum shown in Fig. 10 is advantageously used in cases where the filling of the waste products and the removal of the fermented products takes place with larger time intervals.
For larger systems with drums of z. B. 10-30 m length you can see advantageous automatic material supply and removal, z. B. with the help of Schneckenförde rern, operate.
In systems where the container has a large cross-section, it can be useful instead of the interior of the container as a single, large processing space to ge, the interior of the container, but at least the fermentation zone of the container, with the help of walls in a number of each other to divide separate, cylindrical spaces which extend in the longitudinal direction of the container. A cross section through such a container is shown schematically in FIG. 11, where the container is divided into four rooms by means of walls 44.
Such a division of the interior of the container has several advantages. First, the walls 44 strip off the casing of the container so that it can be made from relatively thin plate material.
Another advantage is that the container will be easier to start up than if the interior of the container were not divided. In the latter case, a greater mass will be gathered in the lower part of the Behäl age than if the container is divided into several rooms, where each room is filled with products that are to be processed.
Furthermore, the subdivision of the container with the aid of inner walls in the walls enables channels to be attached through which air or water or both can be supplied to the interior of the container. The corners of the rooms are preferably somewhat rounded, so that the mutually abutting walls form boundaries for the channels. An exemplary embodiment designed in accordance with here is shown in FIG. 11, where channels 46 and 48 are formed by means of the walls 14 as delimitations, the latter channels being closed to the outside by the container jacket.
If necessary, the fermented products can be subjected to a sieving process after they have been removed, and possibly non-fermented components can be returned to the container drum.
Usually one can expect that the fermentation will take 3-5 days, depending on the nature of the waste products, so that the container drum has a suitable volume for receiving and processing waste products collected within such a period of time should so that the processing process can be carried out continuously.
The radial supply of air is of crucial importance for an uninterrupted fermentation process with sufficient degradation of the waste products, since only such an air supply enables an effective penetration of the contents of the container drum with the air necessary to carry out the processing. It is therefore possible, with a relatively high liter weight of waste products, up to about. 0.7 to 0.8 kg / liter, zii work.
The tests on which the invention is based have shown that surprisingly large amounts of air are required to achieve rapid processing of the drum contents, since it is generally necessary to supply at least 1 in air per 1 kg of products introduced Tests with products for daily garbage disposal, the most advantageous amount of air was around 3 m3 per 1 kg of imported material.
The radial air supply also makes it possible to build containers of any length. the air supply ztnn loading container contents can attack regardless of the length of the drum at all points in the longitudinal direction of the container, where air supply is desired. However, this would not be the case. possible if the air were introduced axially into the container drum, since the visualities of the mass, which in this case could come into effective contact with the air, will only be small.
If an axial air supply is used, it would therefore be impossible to build a continuously working processing plant, but one would have to be content with a batch-wise working plant in which several fermentation tanks might have to be installed to achieve the required capacity.
With a system designed according to the invention, on the other hand, the processing of the waste products can easily take place in a single container and in continuous operation, since at the same time there is the possibility of achieving and regulating the fermentation conditions. The apparatus according to the invention only requires extremely little mechanical maintenance, since both the air supply and the air outlet openings can be of such a type that they are not clogged.
