Abstract

1432685 Piezoelectric igniters BRALIN AG 9 July 1973 [6 Sept 1972 19 Jan 1973] 32629/73 Heading H2A In a piezoelectric igniter, a hammer is normally held at rest in a position where it forms part of a closed magnetic circuit which includes a permanent magnet. In the embodiment shown, the hammer comprises a permanent magnet 9 and a pot-shaped yoke 8, and is normally held against a fixed yoke 10. If, however, a cap 15 is pressed, the magnetic forces acting on the hammer are eventually overcome, and a compressed spring 18 is then free to drive the hammer on to a piezoelectric unit 2. A spring 19 returns the hammer after impact. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the cap (15) is magnetic and surrounds a return spring (31); in addition, a compression spring (18) is joined to both the cap and the hammer. In the arrangement of Fig. 3 (not shown), a yoke hammer (27) normally completes a circuit comprising a permanent magnet (26) and an L- shaped yoke (25), but if a leaf-spring (29) is pushed at one end the yoke hammer is eventually released and is propelled on to a piezoelectric unit (2). The hammer is returned to its rest position by stray lines of flux in the magnetic circuit. In the system of Fig. 4 (not shown), a compression spring (66) acts on a pressure transmission element (63) to release a permanent magnet/yoke hammer (59, 58/68) from a fixed yoke (60) when a cap (67) is pressed. In that of Fig. 5 (not shown), the hammer comprises a ring magnet (72) and a pair of yokes (73, 71), and is normally held against a fixed yoke (74), but a cap (77) and spring (76) are operable to cause the hammer to strike a piezo unit (53).
