Abstract

1,219,253. Selective printing. CREED & CO. Ltd. 26 March, 1969 [3 April, 1968], No. 15783/69. Heading B6F. [Also in Division H1] A hammer mechanism used either for impression or selection has the duration of the impact shortened by using a lost motion connection between the hammer and its actuator. The hammer actuator has its motion reversed whilst the hammer continues to move forward under its own momentum, and when the amount of lost motion in the connection has been taken up, collision between the hammer and its actuator causes a rapid and sudden withdrawal of the hammer. Hammer impression.-In Figs. 1 and (3), the hammer 1 is mounted on a pair of beryllium springs 7 and the L-shaped actuator 2 is pivoted at 9 to the base 6. Energization of the electromagnet 3 attracts the armature 10 attached to the actuator, thereby causing it to pivot and propel the hammer towards the continuously moving type 11. The actuator comes into contact with a fixed rubber cushion 4, from which it rebounds. Collision then occurs between faces F 1 and F 2 causing the hammer 1 to have a sudden reversal of movement, thereby shortening the duration of impact. In (Fig. 3), the rubber cushion 4 is mounted for adjustment between the poles of the electromagnet 3. The position of the actuator with respect to the electromagnet is adjusted with a screw 13 in the base 6. Type lever selection.-In Fig. 4, the hammer mechanism utilized for selecting the type levers mounted on a continuously rotating basket comprises an electromagnet housing 20 containing a coil 21, a guidance sleeve 31 and an actuator 22 composed of a lower portion 23 and a terminal portion 24. Portion 24 is enclosed within the cushion housing 25 containing a rubber cushion 26. A hammer 28 is retained in its neutral position in contact at 27 with the actuator 22 by a spring 29. Energization of the electromagnet causes the actuator to move upwards until it comes into contact with the rubber cushion 26, whereafter the hammer 28 continues to move under its own momentum. The actuator rebounds so that faces F 1 and F 2 collide, causing the hammer to have a sudden reversal of movement.
