Abstract

949,511. Typewriters. DIMENSIONS Inc. May 15, 1961 [June 10, 1960], No. 17580/61. Heading B6F. In. a typewriter of the kind comprising a constantly-rotating typewheel 14 and a platen 12, one of which is moved towards the other at key-selected times for printing, a resilient stop 43 of a material which has a high modulus of elasticity compared to that of the platen is engaged by an arm carrying the movable member at the moment the selected type contacts the platen and causes the type face to move away from the platen after printing at a greater rate than the platen surface returns to normal, blurring thus being prevented. As shown, the typewheel is mounted on a shaft 17 carried by arms 18, 19, freely pivoted on a shaft 23 driven by a motor 25 and coupled to the shaft 17 by gearing 29, 30. An electrically-operated clutch 32, 34 is energized at selected times to couple the arm 18 to the shaft 23 for printing, such selection being effected under control of a keyboard 38 by a brush 37 on the shaft 17 moving over a commutator 36 as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,675,108. The gearing 29, 30 is such that the combined pivotal movement of the arms 18, 19 and rotary movement of the wheel 14 causes a selected type to be moving perpendicularly to the platen at the moment of impact. The impinging of the arm 18 on the stop 43 causes the type face to be moved quickly away from the platen. In the retracted position of the typewheel, the arm 18 is held against a stop 40 by a spring 41. As shown, the stop 43 comprises a slotted strip. A modified type-selecting arrangement comprises an electromagnet or permanent magnet normally energized to hold the arm 18 in retracted position against the action of a compressed spring, but de-energized by the operation of keys through suitable circuitry to allow the typewheel to move towards the platen under the action of the spring in order to effect printing. The spring may be in tension when printing takes place so that its action assists the action of the stop 43 to cause rebound. A modified stop, Fig. 5 (not shown), includes means for adjusting the resilience of the stop and the point of impact of the arm 18 with the stop. The arm 19 may be fixed and the shaft 17 in two parts which are connected by a universal joint.
