Abstract

1432266 Antistatic fuel additive composition E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 29 June 1973 [30 June 1972] 35760/75 Divided out of 1432265 Heading C5G [Also in Division C3] An antistatic composition for addition to hydrocarbon fuels comprises (1) a polysulphone copolymer consisting of about 50 mol. per cent of SO 2 units, from 40-50 mol. per cent of units of at least 1-alkene having from 6-24 carbon atoms and, from 0 to 10 mol. per cent of units of an olefin having the formula wherein A is -C x H 2x )-COOH, x being from 0 to 17 and B is hydrogen or carboxyl with the proviso that when B is carboxyl, x is 0 and wherein A and B together may be a dicarboxylic anhydride group and (2) a quaternary ammonium compound having the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are the same or different alkyl groups having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms; R<SP>3</SP> is an alkyl group having from 1 to 22 carbon atoms or a group wherein R<SP>5</SP> is hydrogen or methyl and n is from 1 to 20; and R<SP>4</SP> is (a) an alkyl group having from 1-22 carbon atoms, (b) an aralkyl group having from 7-22 carbon atoms, (c) a group, R<SP>5</SP> and n being defined as above, (d) a group, wherein R<SP>6</SP> and R<SP>7</SP> are the same or different alkyl groups having from 11-19 carbon atoms or (e) a -R<SP>8</SP>-CO 2 - group wherein R<SP>8</SP> is a hydrocarbyl group having from 1-17 carbon atoms; with the proviso that when R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each alkyl groups, at least one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is an alkyl group having at least 8 carbon atoms, A is an anion, z is 1 but is 0 when R<SP>4</SP> is (d) or (e); y is 1 but when z is 1, y is equal to the ionic valence of A. The copolymer has a weight average molecular wt. of from 10,000 to 1,500,000. Many polysulphone and quaternary ammonium compounds are described. The fuels include aviation gasolines, motor gasolines, jet fuels, naphtha, kerosene, diesel fuels, and distillate burner fuel oils. The components of the composition may be added to the fuel as solutions in benzene, toluene, xylenes or isopropanol.
