Abstract
1432265 Antistatic fuels E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 29 June 1973 [30 June 1972 (3)] 30994/73 Heading C5G [Also in Division C3] An electrically conductive hydrocarbon fuel composition comprises a distillate hydrocarbon fuel (boiling point in the range from 70 to‹ 700‹ F.) and dissolved therein an effective amount of an antistatic polysulphone copolymer (wt. average mol. wt. of from 10,000 to 1,500,000) consisting of (a) about 50 mol. per cent of SO 2 units, (b) 40-50 mol. per cent of units of a 1-alkene or a mixture of 1-alkenes having 6 to 24 carbon atoms and (c) from 0-10 mol. per cent of olefin units of the formula wherein A is -(C x H 2x )-COOM x being from 0 to 17 and B is H or carboxyl, with the proviso that when B is carboxyl, x is 0 and wherein A and B together may be a dicarboxylic anhydride group. There may also be dissolved at least one of (1) quaternary ammonium compounds having the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are C 1 -C 22 alkyl groups, R<SP>3</SP> is C 1 -C 22 alkyl group or group where R<SP>5</SP> is H or Me and n is 1-20 and R<SP>4</SP> is (a) C 1 -C 22 alkyl group, (b)C 7 -C 22 aralkyl group, (c) group where R<SP>5</SP> is H or Me and n is 1-20, (d) a group where R<SP>6</SP> and K<SP>7</SP> are C 11 -C 19 alkyl groups or (e) a -R<SP>8</SP>-CO 2 - group where R<SP>8</SP> is a C 1 -C 17 hydrocarbyl group with the proviso that when R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are each alkyl groups at least one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is an alkyl group having at least 8 carbon atoms; A is an anion; z is 1 but is 0 when R<SP>4</SP> is (d) or (e), y is one but when z is 1 y is numerically equal to the ionic valence of anion A and of (2) polyvalent metal organic compounds selected from hydrocarbon soluble metal aliphatic hydrocarbon carboxylates, metal monoalkyl phosphates, metal dialkyl phosphates, metal alkyl mercaptides and Werner type complexes; the metal having an atomic number of 22 to 29, and the weight ratio of polysulphone copolymer to the metal organic compound is from 5 : 1 to 500 : 1. Many polysulphone copolymers, quaternary ammonium compounds and polyvalent metal organic compounds are described. A particularly preferred Werner type complex is wherein R<SP>5</SP> represents a portion of the carboxylic acid attached to the carboxyl group. The fuel may be aviation gasoline, motor gasoline, jet fuels, naphtha, kerosene, diesel fuel and distillate burner fuel oil. The additives may be added to the fuel as a solution in benzene, toluene, xylenes or isopropanol.
