Abstract

1432030 Gettering SAES GETTERS SpA 10 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 37994/73 Heading H1D A non-evaporable getter consists of at least one metal from the group Zr, Ta, Hf, Nb, Ti, Th and U and of a zirconium-aluminium alloy, the metal and the alloy both being in particle form with the alloy particles distributed throughout the metal particles. The alloy is preferably 16% aluminium, balance zirconium, by weight and the preferred metal is zirconium with a metal to alloy ratio in the range 19 : 1 to 2 : 3. The particles of zirconium and alloy pass respectively through standard U.S. screens of 200 and 60 mesh per inch and are sintered and have a compressive strength of at least 300 kg./sq. cm. The composition can be held in a metal ring shaped channel, on a metal strip or an insulated conductor. The particles can be applied as a liquid suspension or a dry powder and heated to 800‹ to 1200‹ C. The getter can be used in vacuum tubes, X-ray tubes, cathode-ray tubes, klystrons, travelling wave tubes and mercury discharge lamps.
