Abstract

1431884 Extrusion R CHADWICK and O E FLETCHER 15 Aug 1973 [17 Aug 1972] 38365/72 Addition to 1265671 Heading B3P [Also in Division G3] In a modification of the hot extrusion of metals process described and claimed in Specification 1,265,671, the read out of the radiation pyrometer which senses the temperature of the extrusion as it emerges from the die, is corrected by the read out of a temperature sensor, e.g. a theremocouple, or radiation pyrometer responsive to the temperature of a heated billet prior to its transfer into a container of the extrusion press, for instance at the exit of a furnace in which the billet is preheated. The read out from the said sensor is stored in a memory and is then applied to correct the pyrometer read out as soon as the extruded metal emerges from the die. As in the prior Specification the corrected read out from the pyrometer is used to control the speed of the extrusion and maintain the extruded metal temperature substantially at the optimum.
