Abstract
1,218,283. Furnace control systems. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. 15 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967; 5 June, 1967], No. 12817/68. Heading F4B. [Also in Divisions C7 and G3] In a process and apparatus for continuously annealing metal strip the latter passes through a furnace having heating, holding, and cooling chambers; the strip temperature is sensed as it leaves the heating chamber and its speed adjusted to maintain that temperature at the desired level, while the temperature of the coolant supplied to the cooling zone is adjusted to compensate for the change in strip speed. This compensation may be effected by sensing the strip temperature as it leaves the cooling chamber and correspondingly adjusting the heat supplied to the coolant. Additionally the strip temperature may be sensed near the exit of the holding chamber and the supply of heat to that chamber modified as necessary. The strip may be annealed in a controlled atmosphere, such as a nitrogen-hydrogen mixture. As illustrated, heating zone 10 and holding zone 12 are heated by radiant tubes 14 and 16 by burners fired which are under the control of temperature sensing devices 33 and 40. Strip temperature is sensed by radiation pyrometer 39 which through a potentiometer circuit controls the speed of motor 32 operating drive bridle 30. Strip temperature is also sensed at 41 thereby controlling the heat input to tubes 19 in conduit 18 through which coolant flows to pipes 17 in cooling zone 13. In a modification, heating zone 10 is subdivided into two sections; the first is temperature controlled as previously described, while the heat supply to the second and shorter section is controlled from sensor 39 through a system which acts only after a time delay and to large temperature changes.
