Abstract

1439456 Automatic control of heating billets BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 5 Sept 1973 [5 June 1972] 26091/72 Heading G3N [Also in Division F4] The operation of a continuous heat treatment furnace is controlled by sensing the temperature of the workpieces by a number of spaced apart sensors in at least one heating zone, to obtain a heating profile for the zone, comparing the profile with a desired profile, and adjusting the fuel supply to, and flame length of the burners to reduce the difference between the profiles. In a pusher type billet heating furnace, Fig. 1, sensors 26 below give indications of the temperature of the billets. The furnace pressure at the charge end and the waste gas temperature are measured at 32 and 37 and the gas temperature at the inlet and outlet zones are measured by sensors 43, 44. Signals from all the sensors are fed to a computer and the fuel supply and the flame length adjusted automatically.
