Abstract

1431466 Anti-skid braking systems KELSEY HAYES CO 16 Nov 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 53343/73 Heading F2F A skid control system for a vehicle having a pair of front wheels 14, 16, a pair of rear wheels 10, 12 and individual fluid brake systems for each pair of wheels, comprises first and second speed sensing means 38, 40 associated with individual ones of the pair of front wheels 14, 16 for providing respective speed signals representing the speeds of the individual front wheels, the speed sensing means being operatively coupled with skid control means comprising means responsive to an incipient wheel skid at one of the front wheels for modulating the fluid pressure in the brake system for the front wheels, and a high speed select circuit 94 operatively coupled to the first and second speed sensing means comprising means for developing a reference signal representing the speed of the faster wheel of the pair of front wheels. There is also skid control means for the rear pair of wheels 10, 12 comprising speed sensing means 36 associated with those wheels for providing a rear speed signal, a comparison circuit for comparing the rear speed signal with the reference signal, and means for modulating the fluid pressure in the brake system of the rear wheels when the difference between the rear speed signal and the reference signal exceeds a preselected level. As shown, the sensors 38, 40 are connected to a skid control module 92 and the high wheel select logic module circuit 94, the module 92 skid controlling the front wheels 14, 16 by detecting an incipient skid at either wheel to modulate the front brakes via a brake pressure modulator 26; the circuit 94 discriminates against the slower front wheel to provide an output signal representing the speed of the faster front wheel which signal is supplied to an averaging and scaling circuit 98. The latter supplies a signal to a subtractor 102 and which represents the front wheel speed to which the rear wheels are slaved. The sensor 36 is connected to a signal conditioner 104, e.g. a digital-to-analogue converter, which provides a signal to the subtracter 102; a signal is supplied by the subtractor to the brake pressure modulator 24 so that the rear wheel brakes are modulated when the speed of the rear wheels drops below the speed of the front wheels by a preselected slip.
