Abstract

1431393 Preventing air locks in fuel systems FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 19 July 1973 34444/73 Heading F1B In a compression ignition engine in which a pump 5 pumps fuel from a tank 1 to a filter 7 having a restricted by-pass connection 19 from its dirty side to a reservoir 11 and a connection 21 from its clean side to an injection pump 9, the fuel filter is arranged so that any fuel pumped from the dirty fuel side to the clean fuel side flows downwardly to the injection pump whilst fuel bypassing the filter element is pumped to a level higher than the injection pump, the injection pump 9 has a bleed 25 to an auxiliary tank 23 the reservoir 11 and auxiliary tank 23 having outlets higher than the inlets from the filter and the injection pump, the arrangement being such that air in the fuel connections tends to be pumped into the reservoir. In operation pump 5 supplies injection pump 9 through filter 7 so that air that may be present tends to pass through pipe 19 to reservoir 11. The bleed from injection pump 9 consists of filtered fuel and fuel in the auxiliary tank 23 feed a starting device 37. Any excess fuel in the auxiliary tank flows over wall 29, Fig. 2 through a filter 31. When the engine is stopped the head of fuel in the reservoir and auxiliary tank causes a slight pressure in the injection pump 9 which prevents air entering the system. The fuel filter 7 is mounted on the engine so that any fuel by-passed to the reservoir and discharged into the fuel tank heats the fuel in the latter.
