Abstract

Electrodes; supporting; electrolytes, agitating.-A bipolar electrode comprises a non-conducting plate at the upper part of which and on both sides are formed gas chambers open below, while at the lower part of the plate are electrode elements formed of wire and separated from the plate by vertical spacing-means. As shown in horizontal section in Fig. 2 and in vertical section in Fig. 3. the plate 1 may be provided on both sides with ribs 3, 4, over which is wound the continuous wire. This is preferably of such a size that the conductivity of each length is small in relation to the total current, so as to check arcing. Gases generated pass between the ribs to the chambers 6, while separated liquid returns through hollow spaces within the intermediate ribs 4 and is distributed by holes 5. Over the whole of the wire is placed a porous covering 8, non-conducting throughout or where in contact with the wire, so as to form chambers in communication with the gas chambers.
