Abstract

1429741 Measuring water pressure in soil SOIL INSTRUMENTS Ltd 27 Jan 1975 [28 Feb 1974] 9201/74 Heading G1S Pore water pressure in soil is transmitted through a tube 7, Fig 1, and bores 5 to one side of a diaphragm 2 in a sensing head 1, the other side of the diaphragm communicating via filters 12 with pipes 13, 14 running to a measuring station, Fig. 2. In operation the gas circuit shown is supplied with nitrogen from a storage cylinder 20 to pressurize the pipe 14 and cause the diaphragm to seat in the dished part 15 of the head 1. The gas then passes into the pipe 13 which is closed at the measuring point by a valve 29. The pipe 14 is then closed by valve 25 and 13 is vented to atmosphere via valve 29 to allow the pressure in pipe 14 to fall and equal the pressure in cavity 8. At this point the pressure in pipe 14 remains constant and equals the pore pressure in cavity 8 which is indicated on the gauge 26.
