Abstract
1349738 Measuring surfaces of powders T ALLEN 19 April 1971 [20 March 1970] 13679/70 Heading G1S The surface area of a powder is determined by inserting a plug of powdered material into a tubular vessel which is connected at one end via valves T 1 , T 2 , T 3 , T 4 and T 5 to a mercury manometer 13, a reservoir 14, an inlet 15 for gas under pressure, a vacuum gauge 12 and a vacuum pump, evacuating the apparatus with all valves open except for T 4 , then after allowing gas under pressure into the apparatus with only valves T 4 and T 5 open, measuring the rate of change of mercury level in the manometer with only valves T 2 and T 5 open. The rate of change of mercury level may be measured by a plurality of digital timers 16 having actuating contacts extending into the path of travel of the mercury in the manometer 13. Dry air or helium may be the gas under pressure utilized in the determination of the surface area.
