1351724 Testing cigarettes MOLINS Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 Feb 1970] 9669/70 Heading A2C In a cigarette wrapper leak tester 2, the porosity of the wrapper material is tested before forming it into wrappers and the test signal is used to provide compensation at the wrapper leak detector for the varying porosity of the wrapper material, the signal from the porosity tester being fed to the wrapper tester via a reservoir. As shown, suction is applied from a source 8 to a chamber 4 of a known kind of wrapper leak tester 4 and, via a restrictor 16, to a box 12 of a porosity testing device over which the wrapper web 18 is drawn. A closure means 6 around one end of a cigarette 5 under test is connected by a pipe 30 to one side of a pressure transducer 22, and the box 12 is also connected to the same side via a restrictor 24, a reservoir 26 and a restrictor 28. The box 12 includes a bleed 19 to atmosphere. A suction pressure gauge 36 is provided to facilitate adjustment of the level of the mean porosity signal. In another embodiment, positive pressure is applied to the box 12 from a source 9, the connection between the suction source 8 and the box 12 being broken, and the porosity test signal is fed via an alternative connection 37 to the opposite side of the diaphragm 32 of the transducer 22 to that to which the signal from the leak tester 2 is fed. Preferably the pipe transmitting the porosity pressure signal from the reservoir 26 includes a rotary valve timed to transmit the signal as a series of pulses that coincide with the testing of successive cigarettes.
