March 20, 1919 Pistons; pistons, balancing laterally.- The trunk piston of an internal-combustion or other engine has one or more resilient barrel-shaped portions which are normally of slightly greater diameter than the cylinder bore. The barrelshaped portions are rigidly secured to the piston body or integral with it, and extend above the gudgeon-pin bearings. In the form shown in Fig. 2, two sleeves c with inclined or axial slots or grooves d are screwed to a flange on the skirt a<3> of the piston. Alternatively, a sleeve may be secured between a flange on the piston head and a nut screwed on to a flange on the skirt. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, an aluminium piston body is enveloped by a steel or other sleeve c, which rests on a shoulder on the piston and is secured by a nut c<3> screwing into the sleeve. The slits or grooves do not extend to the edges of the piston or sleeve, and may be arranged to form tongues, or may be replaced by rows of holes. In the modification shown in Fig. 10, slippers b attached to the piston body are formed with flexible edges f which normally extend beyond the circumference of the piston body. The edges f may be split, and the piston body may be formed with axial slits h'. The slippers may be attached by screws g, or by dovetail or other joints, or by both. The diameter of the piston in the axis, of the gudgeon pin may be less than that at right-angles to the gudgeon pin.
