Abstract

1429483 Feeding sheets; suction grippers POST OFFICE 12 July 1973 [12 July 1972] 32602/72 Headings B8R and B8H Flat items 12, e.g. letters, are separated from a pile by a suction device 2 and presented to a transport device 3, the suction device being constructed such that covering of the apertured suction foot 14 by an item 12 causes movement of the foot from the pile to the transport device and uncovering of the foot, due to removal of an item by the transport device, causes return of the foot to the pile. As shown, the foot is connected to a hollow, pivotally mounted, arm 16 by a bellows 14 and the arm is connected to a suction box 19 by a further bellows 18. The transport device comprises apertured belts 23 co-operating with a further suction-box 24. The pile is advanced on a series of endless belts 4-8 until the uppermost sheet is sensed by a photodetector 9. Each successive belt moves faster than the preceding one in order to form gaps between the lower edges of the items to ease separation. Separation is also assisted by arranging the pick-up head and the transport device so that each item is slightly bent during movement to the transport device. The belts 23 may be replaced by a porous suction roller. The transport device may be followed by a pair of snatch rollers.
