Abstract

1428801 Electrical connector ITT INDUSTRIES Inc 25 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 25167/73 Heading H2E To pass electrical circuits through a wall, e.g. of a nuclear reactor, a tube 12 with welded flanges 14, 16 is sealed into the wall, and a pipe 18 to carry the conductors is sealed to the tube by "0"-rings between the tube flanges and flanges 24, 127 welded, respectively before and after insertion, to the pipe member. Conductors are glass sealed into a diaphragm part 38 of cup-shaped header 36 welded into the pipe end, with female contacts supported in elastomer on each side mating with the conductor ends and connected respectively to external wiring and to conductor rods passing down the pipe through mid-length support 132. The external elastomer is in grommets in a solid insulator; the internal elastomer forms a plug in the pipe. A sheath 158 containing a thermocouple may also pass through the diaphragm to monitor pipe temperature, and gas port 144 communicating with the pipe interior may be used for monitoring or pressurizing. The inboard pipe end may carry a similar sealing arrangement, both outboard and inboard seals being covered by caps 108, with glands 112 for the passage of cables.
