Abstract

1537062 Coaxial connector STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 11 Nov 1975 46524/75 Heading H2E A coaxial connector comprises a casing 1 coaxial connection terminals 5, 6 within a first chamber in the casing, the first chamber 7 being closed by a first diaphragm 2 there being a second chamber 7<SP>1</SP> behind the first diaphragm closed by a second diaphragm 3 both diaphragms being penetrable by a coaxial plug during connection to the terminals the chambers being fillable with an insulating viscous liquid. In an embodiment the connector is double-ended for connecting two ends of coaxial cable 8, and it comprises a casing 1 made of plastics containing a bulkhead 4 supporting terminals 6 and 5 for connecting the conductors 14 and 15 of cable 8. The diaphragms 2, 3 are made of neoprene, diaphragm 3 being connected to bellows 11 with a stop tube 12 preventing the diaphragm 3 from being pushed towards the bulkhead 4. Two rings 13 are provided for guiding cable 8. Both chambers are filled with insulating viscous liquid such as grease through purge valve 10 and pressure release valve 9 is provided for overflow of liquid during connection. To use the connector, the cable end 8 is inserted in the outer chamber and displaces some liquid through the valve 9. Fresh liquid is introduced through valve 10 under pressure to force out any water brought into the outer chamber by the cable; the cable is then pushed through diaphragm 3 in the second chamber and the bellows 14 is displaced to take up the volume change and more liquid is expelled through valve 9. The connection may then be clamped by a clamping arrangement 16 and both valves sealed.
