Drying.-Paper or other material in sheet form is dried and smoothed by passage through a bath of liquid heated material such as mercury, which has a deleterious effect on the paper &c. Fig. 1 shows a bath of mercury heated by steam-pipes 7, the paper being carried through the bath by submerging-rollers 3. In modifications, the bath may be heated by gas or a solid-fuel furnace.
