Abstract

154,120. Minton, O. March 26, 1920. Drying fabrics &c. in long lengths.-Paper &c. is dried in vacuo by passage through a bath of an indifferent heating medium such as mercury or other metal. Fig. 1 shows apparatus wherein the web of paper &c. passes to and from a vacuous chamber 2 through liquid seals 3, 4 of mercury &c. and is dried in the chamber by passage through a bath of mercury &c. heated by steam pipes 12. Observation windows 17 and vacuum connexions 16 are provided. A single liquid seal may serve for entrance and exit of the material, replacing the two seals 3, 4. The rollers on which the paper &c. is carried through the bath may be of various sizes giving a greater or less smoothing effect, and may be heated internally.
