1427851 Ignition systems TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 17 Jan 1974 [20 Feb 1973] 02322/74 Heading FIB A controlled spark duration ignition system comprises a high frequency continuous wave oscillator 11 including a transformer having a high voltage output winding 18, first circuit means for connecting the output winding to a sparking circuit, an oscillator control winding 26 on the transformer for starting and stopping oscillation, second circuit means for applying a D.C. bias current to the control winding when the oscillator is not oscillating, means transistor 50 controlled in accordance with the engine crank angle for cutting off the D.C. bias at the beginning of each spark duration interval, third circuit means comprising an A.C. low impedance short-circuit path 51 connected in shunt with the D.C. bias current source for stopping the oscillator at the end of each spark duration interval and means 80 incorporated with the A.C. path for increasing the impedance on a predetermined one of the half-cycles of A.C. current flow sufficiently to retard the oscillator on the predetermined half-cycle whereby the oscillator stops on the other half-cycle and the magnetic state of the core of the transformer will always be set so as to ensure instantaneous starting of the oscillator. Under normal operating conditions when the engine is running the control winding 26 is under the control of a spark timing circuit. For example there might be breaker points (not shown) or a circuit to control conduction of the transistor 50. This circuit could be controlled by enginetimed members such as light-sensitive devices or magnetic pick-up members.
