Abstract

1427400 Fluid-pressure servomotor systems MINE SAFETY APPLIANCES CO 26 July 1973 [25 Oct 1972] 35690/73 Heading G3P [Also in Divisions A5 and F2] Breathing apparatus Fig. I, (not shown) wherein gas is normally provided to a facepiece (2) from a compressed gas source (1) via a conduit (4), pressure reducing valve (3), conduit (6), control valve 7, conduit (8), and demand valve (9), is arranged such that an emergency loss of pressure at the gas source 1 communicates via conduit (12) to close valve 7 and the user inhales through an alarm valve 30 which provides a pulse of gas when the gas pressure falls below the predetermined value to signal the user that the control valve has closed. The control valve, Fig. 2, includes a port 17 and seat 18 between the inlet and outlet 26 of the valve, a closure member 22 and closure spring 23, the supply pressure (1) actuating a piston 13 connected with said closure member 22 the spring force being adjustable to alter the critical pressure valve of the supply gas. A stem 15 fixed to the piston 13 and closure member 22 extends through the port 17 and is enclosed by spring 23 which is compressed between the closure member and a collar 24 threaded on to the stem. The alarm valve 30, Fig. 3, includes a valve seat and a valve outlet 36, a diaphragm 37 therebetween and held against the seat by the predetermined gas pressure, a check valve 51 and a seat 53 normally engaging with a flexible valve disc 54 and stem 55 plugged into the check-valve bore 52. Compressed between the front flange 43 of sleeve 42 and the rear wall of the chamber is a coil spring 56 urging sleeve and metal disc 39 to close the valve. When gas pressure falls below the critical value, control valve 7 closes, and inhalation reduces, the pressure in conduits (8) and (32) causing support diaphragm 37 and disc 39 to move rearwardly against the coil spring 56, moving check-valve seat 53, allowing the gas pressure behind diaphragm 45 to drop and admit gas from inlet 35 to the outlet 36.
