Abstract

1427354 Charging cryogenic tanks; revaporizing discharged liquefied gases UNION CARBIDE CORP 30 Nov 1973 [1 Dec 1972] 55621/73 Heading F4P Cryogenic liquid is transferred upwardly from a supply container 40 to an inverted dispensing container 10, Fig. 2, due to vapour pressure in supply container 40, the gas in dispensing container 10 being vented via pipe 21, 23 to an open vent valve 27<SP>1</SP> and passing through an atmospheric heat exchanger 26 which is used for revaporizing liquid later discharged from the dispensing container 10 when the latter is in its upright position, Fig. 1, liquid sensing means 25a being provided in line 23 upstream of vaporizer 26 so that, during the transfer process of Fig. 2, when the dispensing container 10 is filled and liquid overflows into pipe 21, then the presence of liquid is sensed and causes closing of the vent valve 27<SP>1</SP>. The liquid sensing means 25a is preferably a thermistor which transmits a signal via cable 28, controller 29 and cable 30 to the valve 27<SP>1</SP>. Alternatively a pneumatic liquid sensing means can be employed (Fig. 3, not shown). Supply container 40 has a vertical pipe 55 with a coupling 55 which is attached to a similar coupling 19 on a vertical pipe 16 during the transfer process of Fig. 2, the couplings 19, 55 being of the type which open each other when attached and automatically close upon disengagement. Each container 10, 40 has a pressure-relief valve 20, 46.
